Tsuyuki Park, Maple Ridge: a StreetBond sports court and water park

Tsuyuki Park in Albion, Maple Ridge: a community park upgrade that combined sports court and water park elements in a single StreetBond® installation. The project delivers two different surface performance requirements from the same coating system: the demands of a sports surface (traction, colour zoning, durability under athletic use) and a water play surface (slip resistance when wet, UV stability, comfort for barefoot use).

A combined sports and water play installation

The dual nature of the Tsuyuki Park installation reflects a trend we're seeing in BC park redevelopments: parks that serve multiple functions, with surfaces designed to support both active play and water play in the same footprint.

For our team, the challenge in a combined installation is zoning the surface treatments so that each area is optimized for its specific use. Sports court areas require colour zoning that defines play zones and lines; water play areas require colour and pattern that supports the play narrative for children.

StreetBond handles both requirements from the same product family. The formulation is adjusted slightly between applications (aggregate size and density varies between a sports court finish and a spray pad finish), but the base product and application process are consistent, which simplifies project logistics and ensures consistent colour matching between zones.

The system

Square One installs StreetBond under our decorative coatings service. The manufacturer's published facts: a water-based acrylic pavement coating for asphalt or concrete; more than 50 standard colours plus custom mixing; an anti-skid aggregate for wet surfaces, which is why it is specified for spray parks as well as bike lanes; a UV-stable finish; and an 8+ year life cycle, refreshed rather than replaced. How the two surfaces go down

The sequence is the same for the court and the pad: the asphalt is cleaned and primed, the layout is set out on the surface, the colour fields go on in order with the aggregate in the coating, and the surface stays closed until it has cured. What changes is the design brief. The court is zoned for play: key, lines and surround in contrasting colours, as at Brookmere Park in Coquitlam. The pad is zoned for the water: colour fields around the spray features, as at Wesburn Park and Keswick in Burnaby. Maple Ridge parks

Maple Ridge's parks and recreation department has been a consistent client for decorative surface work, and Square One's office is in Maple Ridge, on Stewart Crescent. The city is growing rapidly (Albion is one of the most active development areas in the Ridge), and the parks infrastructure investment reflects the growth in families using these spaces. Our record since Tsuyuki includes a Maple Ridge spray park in blue and orange StreetBond 150, installed in July 2025.

Tsuyuki Park is representative of the investment the City is making: designed spaces that make a visual impression and communicate civic care, not just functional park infrastructure.

For a parks department combining uses

• Zone by use, then by colour. Decide where the court ends and the pad begins before the palette is chosen, so each finish gets the aggregate it needs.
• One product family, one recoat cycle. A court and a pad in the same coating can be refreshed together, in one closure.
• Plan the closure around the season. A spray pad has an operating season and a court does not; schedule the work in the shoulder months so the pad is cured before it opens.
