Wesburn Park spray pad, Burnaby: a StreetBond water park surface, 2023

Wesburn Park in Burnaby received a new spray pad surface in October 2023: StreetBond® durable pavement coatings installed to create a bold, colourful, long-lasting water play surface for the neighbourhood park.

Wesburn Park is a community park in South Burnaby. The spray pad addition is a significant amenity upgrade for the families who use the park through the summer months. We were engaged to deliver the surface installation: the coating that makes a spray pad functional, safe, and visually engaging for children.

What the surface looks like

Square One's photographs of Wesburn Park, filed in the parks and paths gallery, show the finished pad in summer. The main field is a pale, near-white coating, and a teal stream winds across it from one side of the pad to the other, passing under three spray arches and through a purple circle where two boulders flank a small water feature. Purple leaf shapes are scattered across the white as if they had fallen there. The colour is the play narrative: a creek to follow, stones to stand on, a pool at the end, carried flush with the surface.

Why StreetBond leads spray pad applications

StreetBond has become our go-to specification for spray pad and water play surfaces in BC, and for good reason. The product consistently outperforms alternatives in the specific conditions that spray pads generate:

Permanent water saturation: A spray pad surface is wet for its entire operating season. Coatings that don't tolerate constant moisture fail early. StreetBond's chemistry is designed for wet outdoor applications.

Intense UV: Summer spray pad hours coincide with peak UV exposure. Colour systems that aren't UV-stable bleach noticeably within a single season. StreetBond's colour formulation maintains saturation through full BC summer conditions.

Barefoot safety: Aggregate embed in the coating provides traction without roughness: the balance between slip resistance and comfort for running children is something we calibrate specifically for spray pad applications.

The system

Square One installs StreetBond under our decorative coatings service. The manufacturer's published facts: a water-based acrylic pavement coating that bonds to asphalt and to concrete, with the appropriate primer for each; more than 50 standard colours plus custom mixing; an anti-skid aggregate for wet surfaces, which is why it is specified for spray parks as well as bike lanes; a UV-stable finish; and an 8+ year life cycle that ends in a recoat rather than a replacement. The October installation timeline allowed the surface to fully cure before the park closed for winter, ensuring it would be ready for full-season use the following summer. Planning the installation in the shoulder season is our standard approach for spray pad projects: it minimizes disruption to park users and maximizes cure time before the surface sees its first summer load.

For a parks department planning a spray pad

• Design the colour as the play. A stream, a pool and stepping stones give children a story to run; the coating can carry any layout the landscape architect draws.
• Plan the recoat from day one. Colour is the first thing to go on a pad that is wet all summer; a recoat over the existing surface, as at Keswick, restores it without a rebuild.
• Book the shoulder season. Coat in the fall or spring, cure through the closure, open on time.
