Brookmere Park sports court, Coquitlam: a StreetBond basketball court coating

Brookmere Park in Coquitlam is a neighbourhood park upgrade that included a new sports court surface: basketball themed, with colour zoning installed using StreetBond® coatings.

Sports courts are a well-suited application for StreetBond. The requirements align directly with what the product does best: bright, saturated colours that stay consistent under heavy foot traffic and BC weather, a surface that reads the court markings clearly from standing height, and durability that outlasts painted alternatives by years.

What the photograph shows

The lede photograph is the court from the sideline. Inside the fence, the key under the single hoop is blue with a purple free-throw circle; the run of court between the key and the camera is left as dark asphalt, with three large orange basketballs coated onto it; and the field outside the court lines is a solid plum-purple that wraps the whole enclosure. Three star-shaped concrete seats sit on the surface for the people waiting for next. The "basketball theme" is the balls themselves, at the scale of a child lying on one: the court is a playground first and a regulation surface second.

Sports court colour zoning

The Brookmere Park installation uses contrasting StreetBond colours to define the key, the three-point arc, and the surrounding court surface. This is the approach we use on all sports court installs: the zoning is what makes the court legible for players, and it has to hold up through seasons of use without colour drift between zones.

StreetBond is applied over the existing asphalt. The prep work is as important as the coating itself: the asphalt surface has to be clean, structurally sound, and properly profiled so the coating adheres without lifting or delaminating at the edges. Where a court has old paint, moss or a failed sealer, our vapour blasting rig strips and primes it first.

Aggregate is embedded in the coating for traction, critical on a sports surface where lateral movements and quick direction changes are the norm.

The system

Square One installs StreetBond under our decorative coatings service. The manufacturer's published facts: a water-based acrylic pavement coating for asphalt or concrete, with an anti-skid aggregate, more than 50 standard colours plus custom mixing, and a UV-stable finish; an 8+ year life cycle, refreshed rather than replaced. The manufacturer lists sports courts among its applications alongside bike lanes, plazas and school zones. Parks and recreation

Sports court upgrades are a common request from parks and recreation departments across BC. The StreetBond approach is typically faster and less disruptive than tear-out and replacement, while delivering a surface quality that holds up comparably.

For a parks department or school district

• Decide what the court is for. A regulation key and three-point arc suit a court that hosts games; a themed surface like Brookmere's suits a court that hosts recess.
• Check the asphalt before the colour. Cracking, ponding or a soft base are paving problems; StreetBond goes on once the surface is sound.
• Keep the colour codes. A recoat years from now should match the zones the players know, and the record makes that a matter of procedure.
