Ralph's Farm Market, Murrayville: a custom stamped asphalt parking lot

Ralph's Farm Market on Fraser Highway in Murrayville is a BC institution: what started as a seasonal hay wagon in 1982 grew into a year-round 11,000 square foot market. When they upgraded the parking lot, they wanted the surface to reflect the care they put into the rest of the operation.

Square One Paving and the manufacturer worked together on this one: a custom stamped asphalt design that ties in store branding and creates an outdoor retail experience that matches the market's character.

What the photograph shows

The lede photograph is the lot on an ordinary market day. Two red brick-pattern walkways run across the fresh black asphalt from the parking rows toward the store, the white stall lines meeting them at right angles, with the market's red storefront and its sign behind. Customers with a cart are crossing on the red; the cars are parked on the black. That is the whole design idea in one frame: the pattern marks where people walk, and drivers read it without a sign. The project record holds three more frames, including the walkways with a truck in the lot.

Stamped asphalt for commercial parking

Commercial parking lots are a significant surface area in most retail operations: often the first thing a customer walks across and the context that shapes their first impression of the business. A well-designed parking surface communicates that the operator cares about the details.

At Ralph's Farm Market, the brief was to create a one-of-a-kind surface that feels intentional: an impressive landscape that reinforces the market's brand while functioning as a practical parking surface for customers and delivery vehicles.

We used StreetPrint® stamping to create the pattern in the asphalt, followed by StreetBond® coatings in colours selected to complement the market's palette. The result is a parking lot that functions correctly: good drainage, clear lane markings, accessible pathways, while looking like something a designer specified.

The systems

Square One installs both under our stamped asphalt service; the figures are the manufacturer's. Its published facts on StreetPrint: a heated template pressed into the asphalt, so the brick is built into the surface rather than painted on; new or existing asphalt; a slip-resistant texture that is snowplow and de-icing salt safe; and a 10–20 year published service life, which matters in a lot that is swept, plowed and driven on daily. StreetBond supplies the colour: a water-based acrylic coating with an anti-skid aggregate, more than 50 standard colours plus custom mixing, and an 8+ year life cycle, refreshed rather than replaced. The branding integration

Incorporating store branding into a parking lot surface is a detail that not every operator considers, but the payoff is real: the surface becomes part of the brand experience rather than just functional infrastructure. Regular customers notice the consistency between the interior presentation and the exterior surfaces.

• Pattern the walkways, not the whole lot. Brick where people walk and plain asphalt where cars park is what makes the pattern legible; it is also what keeps the scope sensible.
• Match the colour to the building. Ralph's red walkways answer the red storefront. A colour taken from the signage or the cladding reads as branding; a colour chosen from a chart reads as paint.
• Schedule around the paving. The pattern is imprinted into asphalt the paving contractor has just placed, so the stamped scope belongs on the paving schedule; on an existing lot, sound asphalt takes the pattern once the site visit confirms it will.
