Granville Island Crosswalk: Two Years On and Still Sharp

The TrafficPatternsXD crosswalk we installed on Granville Island — in cooperation with HUB Surface Systems — is now just over two years old. It looks as new as the first day it was installed.
This is worth noting because Granville Island is not a gentle test environment. The island draws millions of visitors annually. Vehicle traffic includes delivery trucks serving the Public Market, transit buses, and constant passenger vehicle turnover. Pedestrian volumes at crosswalk locations are intense, particularly in summer.
What Two Years on Granville Island Means
Two years at a high-traffic Granville Island crosswalk is the equivalent of many more years at a typical suburban intersection. The concentration of foot and vehicle traffic accelerates wear in ways that make performance visible early.
TrafficPatternsXD was specified because of those expected conditions. The XD formulation offers enhanced abrasion resistance over the standard TrafficPatterns line, specifically for situations where crossing frequency and turning vehicle traffic would accelerate degradation of a lesser product.
The colour remains saturated. The edges remain clean. There's no delamination at the margins — a failure mode that affects paint-based and lower-quality thermoplastic systems. The install is performing as designed.
The Performance Argument
We document performance at regular intervals on installed projects because the performance data is what supports accurate specification for new projects. When an engineer, municipality, or developer asks how long a TrafficPatternsXD installation lasts, the answer shouldn't be the manufacturer's data sheet — it should be the field performance on comparable BC projects.
Granville Island is a strong data point. High traffic, variable weather, demanding conditions. Two years in, the system is performing.
