Brighouse SkyTrain Station sits at the south end of the Canada Line, where No. 3 Road in Richmond meets one of the busiest transit interchanges on the Lower Mainland. TransLink asked us to install TrafficPatternsXD across the pedestrian transition zones. We did — and the install speaks to a different category of pavement marking than you'd spec for a residential street.

Why TrafficPatternsXD

TrafficPatternsXD is the heaviest-duty member of the preformed thermoplastic family. Where standard TrafficPatterns is already engineered for vehicular and high-traffic pedestrian environments, the XD variant is formulated for sites that take a compounded beating: transit buses, commercial delivery vehicles, salt-tracked winter concourses, and the kind of continuous foot traffic a Canada Line terminus generates.

The pattern fuses directly into the asphalt through torch-down application. It doesn't sit on the surface the way paint does. It's structurally integrated, which is the only approach that holds up in an environment where surface abrasion is constant and scheduled maintenance windows are minimal.

The No. 3 Road Context

No. 3 Road is a primary commercial artery running the length of Richmond. Brighouse Station sits inside that context — bus bays, taxi ranks, rideshare pickups, and a pedestrian volume that doesn't let up between 5 AM and midnight.

A pavement marking at this site has to read clearly in three conditions:

  • Bright midday sun reflecting off the concourse surface
  • Wet overcast afternoons where contrast flattens
  • Night under sodium and LED station lighting

TrafficPatternsXD carries through all three. The colour pigment runs through the full depth of the thermoplastic, not on the surface, which means UV fade and mechanical wear don't erase legibility the way they erase painted markings.

The Install

Transit sites do not close for pavement work. Our crew worked in coordinated overnight windows, staging equipment after the last revenue train, completing the install in the active window, and clearing the site before the morning service resumed.

Before the preformed sheets go down, the substrate gets assessed and prepared. Any oil, adhesive residue, or surface contamination has to be removed — a thermoplastic install over a contaminated substrate is a failed install waiting to surface. Where prep was required, we ran it in the same overnight window the install happened.

The torch-down application is straightforward once the layout is set. The crew heats the asphalt substrate and the back of the sheet simultaneously until the two bond, then rolls the sheet flush and lets it cool. The chemistry handles the rest.

Service Life at a Transit Site

Expected service life for TrafficPatternsXD at a high-traffic transit terminus is in the seven-to-ten-year range at full colour saturation, with gradual softening past that window. That's an order of magnitude longer than painted markings at the same site, and the maintenance overhead is proportionally lower.

For TransLink, that math matters. Painted markings at a Canada Line station would need re-striping every 12 to 18 months, which means repeated overnight closures, repeated mobilization costs, and repeated inconvenience for the operations team. A thermoplastic install trades a higher up-front cost for a service life that makes the lifecycle cost substantially lower.

What Transit Agencies Can Take From This

If you're operating a transit facility and evaluating your pavement marking strategy, the conversation usually comes down to three questions: how long will it last, how will it read under your site conditions, and what does the install schedule look like against your operational window.
