Why Green Means More Than Visibility

A bike lane on a road is a line. A bike lane painted green is a space. The difference is not chromatic. It's territorial.
When we apply green coating to a cycling corridor — a StreetBond SR system matched to the substrate and traffic load — we are doing more than improving visibility. We are converting a graphic into a place. A driver passing the lane no longer sees a stripe and a symbol; they see a coloured zone that is no longer their road. The territory changes. So does the behaviour.
The visibility argument is real
Let's not pretend the visibility benefit doesn't matter. It does. Coloured bike lane treatments measurably reduce conflicts at intersections, particularly during the moments of weakest perception — dawn, dusk, rain, fog. The retroreflective properties of our SR systems extend the working visibility into night-time hours, which on a forested BC bridge in October is not a minor variable.
But every research synthesis that has examined coloured cycling treatments comes back with the same secondary finding: drivers don't just see the lane more. They yield the lane more. The behavioural shift is larger than the perceptual shift.
That delta is the territorial effect.
What the colour says, before language
Drivers reading a sign make a deliberate cognitive transaction. They acquire the sign, parse the text, and decide whether to comply. The transaction takes meaningful time and is consciously revocable.
Drivers reading a colour make no such transaction. The colour bypasses linguistic processing entirely. It registers as environment — like a parking meter or a hedge or a curb — and shapes behaviour without ever asking the driver to decide. There is nothing to revoke because there was no decision in the first place.
This is the property that makes coloured cycling lanes work even with drivers who would consciously prefer not to yield. The colour decides for them, in the half-second their attention is elsewhere.
What we install, and why
For a heavy-traffic corridor — bus rapid transit, urban arterials, BRT-adjacent cycling infrastructure — we specify the coating with the system's manufacturer for that load.
For lower-traffic urban corridors and bridge applications, StreetBond SR is the standard call. It's lighter on the substrate, applies more like a coating than a surface system, and gives us the colour palette we need for civic-scale design integration.
For a bridge cycling lane like the one in the photograph above, we coordinate with the structural engineers on substrate condition, weight loading, and drainage. The coloured surface adds negligible structural load but does add a maintenance schedule — typically a touch-up cycle on a 5-to-7 year horizon, depending on UV exposure and traffic.
The municipality's case for green
A municipality looking at coloured cycling infrastructure is making a compound investment. Visibility, behavioural compliance, Vision Zero alignment, and — increasingly — legibility for the cyclist. A consistent green corridor across a city is something a cyclist can plan a commute around. It becomes a navigation primitive. The colour is the route.
That last property is the one we're most interested in. When the colour starts behaving like wayfinding, the cycling network gains a kind of coherence that no signage system can match. The cyclist follows the green. The driver yields the green. The colour does what the road geometry and the lane lines, on their own, never quite manage.
