BC driveways done right: what to expect from a premium paving install

Your driveway is the first thing people see when they pull up to your home. Before they notice the fresh trim, the landscaping, or the front door, they've already formed an impression. In BC, where homes are a serious investment and curb appeal has real dollar value at resale, that impression matters more than most homeowners realize.

Here's what a premium residential driveway actually looks like, and what you should expect from anyone doing this kind of work.

BC's climate is not forgiving

The freeze-thaw cycles in the Fraser Valley. The persistent wet seasons on Vancouver Island. The weeks of standing water that pool on flat Lower Mainland lots before they have a chance to drain. This province is hard on surfaces that weren't designed for it.

We've seen driveways fail within a few years because a contractor chose the wrong product, applied it at the wrong temperature, or skipped the base assessment entirely. They look fine on day one. The cracking starts at the edges by year two. By year three, the colour has gone patchy in the UV and the repair cost is starting to look like a full redo.

A proper BC install starts before any product goes down: drainage assessment, base condition review, and choosing a system whose manufacturer publishes how it performs in wet weather, freeze-thaw and traffic.

What we install

Depending on the condition of your existing surface, your budget, and the look you're after, there are a few directions we typically go.

StreetBond decorative coating

If your existing asphalt is structurally sound, StreetBond is a colour coating that changes the surface without replacing it. The chart runs to more than fifty colours, from warm terracotta to deep charcoal and slate grey, and the coating carries an anti-skid aggregate for grip underfoot. The manufacturer publishes an 8+ year life cycle, after which the surface is recoated rather than rebuilt. This is the upgrade when you want a clean, finished look without new asphalt.

StreetPrint stamped asphalt

This is the one that stops people on the street. StreetPrint patterns (brick, cobblestone, herringbone, slate) are pressed into the asphalt itself and coloured with StreetBond. The result looks like laid hardscape. Structurally, it's still asphalt: one continuous surface with no joints to heave, and the manufacturer publishes it as safe for snowplows and de-icing salt. Gated estate driveways, heritage homes with circular entries, townhome complexes improving their streetscape: this is where StreetPrint earns its reputation. The manufacturer publishes a 10–20 year service life for it.

Vapour blasted surface prep

Not every driveway needs a new surface. Sometimes it needs to be prepared properly for one. Square One runs a mobile vapour blasting service. The abrasive travels in water, so it strips old coatings, lifts stains and cleans the surface back before a new system goes down, and the dust stays on the ground: no dust cloud, no chemical residue. A cleaner result than pressure washing alone, and a better base for whatever comes next.

The process: no surprises

We don't show up on day one with a crew and start work. Every residential job starts with a site visit.

We walk the driveway with you: checking the condition of the existing asphalt, reading the drainage patterns, flagging any structural concerns that should be addressed before a decorative system goes down. Then we walk you through options: product choices, colour samples, pattern selections. You get a clear written quote before anything is scheduled. No pressure calls, no manufactured urgency.

On install day the crew is Square One's own, the same crews that do our municipal work. We clean up after ourselves, and we don't disappear when the job is done: once the surface has cured, we walk the finished driveway with you.

What a premium install actually means

The difference between a quality job and a budget one is rarely obvious on day one. It shows up in year three when the edges are peeling, the joints are cracking, and the surface has aged in ways that cost real money to fix.
